Obituary Pics and Other Fun Pics

The people here spend a lot of time and money when a loved one passes away.  One can see posters of the deceased plastered on signs, walls of building (here), bulletin boards at church and even car windows! (below)

Church at Danfa Ward

Each Sunday we attend a different ward in our capacity to oversee the Literacy Program. This particular Sunday we went to the Danfa Ward. Here is the sign leading down the dirt road to the church.

This is the dirt road leading to the church.

Outside of the building where the church meets. It is a converted house.

This is Sister Djisa, who is the Literacy Specialist for the Stake. She was very sweet and accommodating.

The Primary children were enjoying their singing time. They sounded lovely.

These are the Priesthood Brethren in their class.

As we were leaving church. All these people will walk home. A few will take a cab. There were only about 4 other vehicles in the parking lot, which was only the space in front of the house.

Tro Tro and cab sayings!

The African people are not shy about displaying their feelings about Jesus and God. This is the entire side of a building. Most of the cabs and buses (large vans that are called Tro Tro's) have some reference to Diety. I will share a few examples.

These are just a few of the ones we've seen. I will add more later.

Stake Relief Society Women's Conference

I was invited to speak at a Stake Relief Society Women's Conference at the Ashaiman Stake Center. They asked me to speak about Literacy. It was a wonderful experience and I met some dear sisters. This is a shot of them singing "As Sisters in Zion" accapella. I wish you could hear the singing! I offered to play, but the keyboard did not work. But they sounded lovely without accompaniment.

I spoke for over 20 minutes and they seemed intrigued with my "Southern Accent."

This is the counselor in the Stake Presidency who gave a presentation on the duties of parents in the home. He did a great job.

These are the people that participated on the program. The men are the 1st and 2nd counselors in the Stake Presidency. The others are the Stake Relief Society Presidency and the other speakers. I love their beautiful outfits!

Helping at the MTC

I helped with the intake of 112 new missionaries on Sept 30. I am checking the immunization records of these 2 Sister missionaries. They were both from Nigeria.

Elder and Sister Nay also checking immunization records.

These are the first 2 missionaries ever from Senegal. The one on the right was a member of the Church and the one on the left was not. Elder Batoumeni taught his good friend, Elder Ngoudiabantou, the gospel and he joined. Now they are the first 2 missionaries to leave Senegal to serve missions and they get to do it together! It was a privilege to meet these 2 special young men.

Both of these pictures are of missionaries lined up to use the internet to email home to let their families know they made it safely.

Linda"s Birthday!

Elder and Sister Winegarden surprised me with this beautiful birthday cake!

We went to dinner with Elder and Sister Liljenquist at a nice restaurant called Bistro 22.  The meal was delicious and we enjoyed visiting with our friends. They came back to our apartment and had cake and ice cream with us.

Linda's Activities

I found a couple of Sisters who like to sing almost as much as I do.  Liz Liljenquist, center, is our soprano. Beverly Winegarden is a great alto and I add the 2nd soprano or tenor. Both of their husbands also work as Legal Counsels in the Area Office. So we call ourselves the "Legal Sisters." We have sung for our Scripture Study group and plan to sing again soon. Unfortunately, Liz will be leaving in November, so we will have to find a replacement. I love a women's trio.

I am also singing in a Community Choir called Accragio. That is a combination of Accra and Adagio (a musical term). I don't have a picture of this group to add, but just wanted to mention it in my activities post. It is an excellent group, with many people from different parts of the world. Several are connected to one of the many embassies located here. It is a group of about 35 or so. I am enjoying our rehearsals every Tuesday evening. The accompanist for the choir is the wife of Chris' boss, so she is the connection.
I have had the opportunity to take a couple of tennis lessons with these 2 sisters. Sister Shelley Nash, on the left, me, Sister Diane Carter, and our instructor, Daniel. We play at 6:30 in the morning, in order to beat some of the heat and so I can get to the office at a respectable time. Unfortunately, Sister Carter's mission time was up and she just left. Sister Nash and I will continue to go when we can.
